Welcome

We are delighted to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child to Hamworthy Middle School. Hamworthy Middle School provides a caring community, committed and dedicated teachers and support staff, specialist teaching facilities, a very pleasant site with its own indoor swimming pool and a supportive Governing Body. At Hamworthy Middle School pupils receive a sound academic education in a secure and happy environment. Visitors find a calm, friendly atmosphere and comment on pupil's good manners, discipline and smart appearance.

The School

Hamworthy Middle School was built in the early 1970's on a beautiful and spacious site with views of Poole Harbour, the Purbecks and Brownsea Island. Within the first few years a group of parents added the heated indoor swimming pool. Through the years there have been a variety of changes to the building, these provide specialist areas and facilities to enable the school to offer all pupils a range of curriculum subjects and opportunities.

The school consists of four year groups:-

·	8 - 9 years	(Year 4)
·	9 - 10 years	(Year 5)
·	10 - 11 years (Year 6)
·	11 - 12 years	(Year 7)

All children are based in classes of about 30 under the responsibility of the class teacher.

Through the year each child builds a special relationship with other class members and

their teacher.

We are always happy to meet with parents and discuss any concerns or offer advice

and information. Each term there is an opportunity to discuss your child's work and

progress during the parent /teacher consultation evenings. Parents are always

welcome to make additional appointments to see teachers. Please contact the school

office first to arrange a convenient time for both parents and staff.

The School Mission - Making a Difference

Thank you for such a positive start to the new school year. The children have returned, smart and with a pleasing and positive attitude. The staff have been very busy preparing a full and interesting curriculum as well as a number of new activities, visits and visitors. We are always seeking ways to enhance the curriculum and ensure that pupils are offered rich and full opportunities.

A very warm welcome to all our new pupils and families. We look forward to working with you and hope that your time at Hamworthy Middle School will be enjoyable and positive. We also extend the welcome to our new staff. We are delighted that you are joining the school community and hope that you enjoy your time with us.

New Initiatives

Communication and Relationships with Parents

 * We will aim to send all newsletters and other communications home on Thursday.
To assist with this please ask your child on a Thursday for letters and check
their bags. We will also indicate letters in the Home School Diary.

    * Each wednesday 3.15 - 3.45pm there will be a parents 'drop in' for quick
questions and concerns. Please enter through the main door signing in at the
school office. Longer appointments can still be made by making an appointment
      through the school office.

    * We are looking at the format of the news letters to try to keep them brief and
      informative with more regularity.

    * We are considering the arrangements for parents consultation evenings.

We are again hoping to raise the profile and importance of the Home School Diary as
this is such an important means of communication.

Behaviour

 * The school staff are reassesing this and re-establishing agreements and expectations.

Homelearning

This year again we are planning to focus on the pupils who fulfil their homework tasks.
Too much time and energy can be spent chasing the children who choose not to do
their homework.

 * All pupils will be set homework / home learning, as outlined in the school policy
      and brochure.

    * This will involve a whole range of activities and tasks and won't always require
      formal written tasks.

    * Parents will be notified where pupils continually choose not to complete tasks.

We would encourage all parents to encourage their child to complete homework. Children
who have support from home and regularly complete homework make considerably better
progress in school.

The School Curriculum

Our focus, like the DfES, is 'Excellence and Enjoyment'. Each year we evaluate and 'tweak' our taught curriculum to ensure that we offer pupils an enriched curriculum with first hand, interactive activities, appropriate visits, visitors and guest teachers. We pride ourselves that we are a learning school. The aim of the school is to provide children with the best possible education to meet their needs. The National Curriculum provides the framework within which the school works. The planning, quality, dedication and expertise of the staff together with the time and care taken to equip and resource each area ensure that our pupils receive a broad, relevant and interesting curriculum.
